Switch port security is a switch security feature used on Cisco switches that controls access to switch ports based on the MAC (Media Access Control) addresses. We do switch port security configuration on switch ports to restrict and allow specific number of devices on that port. If the number of the allowed mac address is exceeeded then violation occurs.

There are three different violation modes. These are:
- Shutdown
- Protect
- Restrict

Shutdown: Default mode. It puts the interface into the error-disabled state immediately and sends an SNMP trap notification. It causes the SecurityViolation counter to increment.

Protect: It drops packets with unknown source addresses until you remove a sufficient number of secure MAC addresses to drop below the maximum value. I do not cause any counter increase.

Restrict. It drops packets with unknown source addresses until you remove a sufficient number of secure MAC addresses to drop below the maximum value and causes the SecurityViolation counter to increment.
