The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), or Indian Code of Civil Security, is a bill that aims to modernize and streamline India's criminal justice system. It was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 12, 2023, and enacted on December 25, 2023, as a replacement for the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (CrPC). The BNSS aims to address issues such as lengthy case backlogs, low conviction rates, and delays in the justice system. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday notified the date for the three new criminal laws-- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023-- and announced that these will come into force from July 1 of the year 2024.
